Smart connected solar & battery

As more people connect renewables to the network, it gets harder to maintain a reliable power supply. That's why we've introduced energy management which  helps balance the supply and demand of the local network. This provides a more stable grid, fewer outages, and broader solar access for everyone. We call this smart connected solar and battery.

When you connect your new solar or battery systems, you become part of Community Wave at no extra cost and your system will be energy managed. Your business will get access to more savings and more rewards for you and your community.

How does energy management work?

Smart Connect Solar uses internet-connected solar technology. This helps us manage high levels of solar energy on the network.

It also ensures a safe and reliable power supply for the whole community. The technology tackles the challenges of balancing the flow of energy across the network.

And you get rewarded for supporting the energy network with your solar system and helping your community.

Understanding your solar and battery setup with energy management

We want to be transparent about how we manage solar and battery energy to keep the electricity network reliable for everyone. This is how it works...

Compatible solar and battery inverters

You'll need to ensure your solar and battery inverters are compatible with our SGD to be eligible for Community Wave and comply with our technical requirements.

Please double check with your solar retailer or installer to ensure they select a compatible inverter from this list - to ensure your system complies with our technical requirements.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is a Secure Gateway Device (SGD)?

The SGD is a small communication device that connects your solar and battery assets to Horizon Power's energy management system.

  • Is it only excess energy I export back into the network that will be energy managed?

When energy management is needed, smart connected solar systems will have the amount of solar energy generated reduced. This applies to both the energy used and the exported amount.

This amount is the same across all smart connected systems in the town, so it's fair.

Horizon Power assets, like our solar and wind farms will be turned down first - so we can minimise the impact of energy management on customer systems.

  • Are all solar and battery energy assets managed the same?

    No.

    • Horizon Power assets, like our solar and wind farms will be turned down first - so we can minimise the impact of energy management on customer systems.
    • Customer systems that are smart connected- will be energy managed the same amount in the town, so it's fair.
  • Will I know how much my system has been energy managed?

Yes. You can view how much you’ve been energy managed each month by logging into My Account.

Navigate to the Usage section and select 'Insights' and open the section 'Monthly summary':

    MyAccount screen showing energy management

  • I’m installing a battery, is there specific settings required?

Yes. Your installer will configure the battery system settings during installation - as per our technical requirements. This means your system:

    • won't export any excess energy to the network during the sunniest part of the day; or
    • charge during the network peak in the afternoon between 3pm - 9pm (when the whole community uses the most energy at once).
  • How do I know my data is secure?

Keeping your data safe is our priority. Your solar and battery assets connect to our energy management system via the Secure Gateway Device (SGD).

This has embedded cyber security to keep your solar data safe.

It can only communicate with your SGD and can’t access other devices connected to the internet such as mobile phones or laptops.

  • I have a Feed in Management system installed, what changes for me?

Feed In Management is an older technology we use to energy manage systems greater than 30kVA.

Horizon Power will be transitioning the old devices across to Smart Connect Solar at no additional cost to the customer.
